    AI Learning Coach

The AI Learning Coach is an integrity-first AI tutor designed for college students who want to use generative AI to support their learning without risking academic misconduct. Many students face confusion around AI use policies because rules vary widely between courses, professors, and assignments, leaving them unsure when AI help is appropriate. Our team's survey of 20 Indiana University students found that 90% have avoided AI for schoolwork out of fear of violating a policy, and 75% have experienced AI policies that differ significantly between their classes.

The AI Learning Coach addresses this problem by grounding itself in the student's uploaded course syllabus and acting as a Socratic tutor and guiding students through problems with clarifying questions, step-by-step breakdowns, and concept explanations rather than handing over final answers. What makes our artifact unique is that it tailors every interaction to the specific academic integrity rules of each course, giving students confidence that the help they receive is both genuinely useful and policy compliant.

    To explore the project webpage:

    1. Visit our project page at https://ai-learningcoach.netlify.app.
    2. Scroll through the sections to learn about the problem, our research process, and the team behind the project.
    3. In the "Live Demo" section, click any of the five scenarios on the left to see  how the AI Learning Coach responds in different academic situations, from helping with a math problem to handling a student who asks for a direct answer.

To try the working AI Learning Coach:

    1. Upload your course syllabus so the AI can identify your professor's specific AI use policy.
    2. Ask any question and the AI will guide you toward understanding while respecting your course's academic integrity rules.

    Description of the video:

    Hi, everyone. My
name is Parker Minne, and this
is Team G's group project, the AI
    Learning Coach. Our project focuses
on helping students use AI in a way that
    supports academic learning while following
integrity policies. One of the biggest
problems students face is that every
class has different rules about AI
use, which can make students hesitant to
use AI tools at all. Our solution is the
AI Learning Coach, which reads a core
    syllabus first, understands the
professor's AI policy, and then acts as
a Socratic tutor instead of simply
    giving answers. Here on our
prototype webpage, we explain the problem
    we identified, the research
process we followed, and how the AI
Learning Coach works. We included examples
of how the AI responds to students
in a learning -focused and integrity
-aware way. Now I'm going to
    demonstrate the custom GPT
    artifact itself. For this demo,
    I'll upload a sample course
syllabus along with a sample homework
    assignment. First thing the
AI does is analyze the syllabus and
    identify academic integrity
    expectations for the course before
helping the student. Now I'll ask
the AI for help with one of the
problems. As you can see, instead
of immediately giving the answer, the
AI guides the student step-by-step using
    questions and explanations to
encourage understanding. Now try asking for the direct answer instead. AI still follows the
academic integrity rules from the syllabus
and redirects the student back toward
learning rather than simply completing the
    assignment for them. This demonstrates
the main goal of our project, creating an
AI tool that supports education responsibly
    while helping students build understanding
and confidence. In the future, this
project could be expanded with additional
    learning features, personalized support,
    and integration into educational
    platforms.
