Hi everyone,
Welcome back! In case you missed the news, below is a quick recap of important updates and new tools that came out this summer –– which I've followed with some reminders about resources that can be especially useful at the start of the semester.
I hope you're off to a good start!
New Canvas features
- The Modules tool now gives you the ability to bulk publish and un–publish modules and module items: Here's a Screencast about Modules Bulk Publish and Unpublish
- New Quizzes now includes a Rich Content Editor (RCE), supports some third party apps, and gives you the ability to create zero point practice quizzes.
- The Enhanced Gradebook updates the Gradebook view and allows the creation of custom filters: Here's a video about the new organization and sorting features.
CidiLabs tools
- You now have access to Cidi Labs apps like the Multi–Tool for quickly building a Canvas course, Upload/Embed Image for working with images inside of Canvas, and TidyUp for identifying and deleting unused course materials. I'll publish in–depth overviews in the coming weeks.
Generative AI webinars
- If you missed the last webinar on "ChatGPT, Generative AI, & Syllabi: An Ethics of Practice," here's the recording and the presentation (including syllabus details).
- Register for the September 19th event to explore a range of Generative AI applications for teaching and learning. If you participated in the last speed rounds, there are new topics this time.
Next.IU pilots
- Join the Delphinium pilot to explore a customizable student engagement platform that integrates with Canvas to increase student motivation by celebrating achievements, visualizing progress, and personalizing communication.
Start of the semester tools and resources
- Pressbooks are a great starting place if you're looking for Canvas insights and/or some active learning activities: Check out A Canvas Semester Checklist, Canvas Kapow!, Zoom to the Next Level, Top Hat Activities, Video Engagement
- IT Training provides custom training sessions for IU groups and classes of 10 or more, and they also offer online courses and importable course content on many topics.
- NameCoach can help you simplify introductions and avoid mispronunciations. Use Canvas to invite students to record their names or to create a NameCoach assignment.
- The Technology Tool Finder can help you discover IU teaching and learning tools that fit with what you'd like to do or what you'd like your students to be able to do.
- Your local teaching center is here to provide assistance throughout the semester, whether you have a quick question about Canvas or a larger question about how to improve student engagement.
